Resize GIF
Change the width and height of an animated GIF by percentage or exact pixels. Every frame is scaled together, so the animation stays in sync. Need to trim edges first? Use Crop GIF.

How to resize a GIF
Upload your GIF
Drop an animated or still GIF up to 30 MB onto the box, or paste it from your clipboard.
Pick the new size
Scale by percentage, or type an exact width or height. Keep the lock on to preserve the aspect ratio.

Preview the result side by side with the original and save it. No watermark is added.
Resizing GIFs without wrecking them
A GIF is a stack of frames, and every one of them has to be scaled by exactly the same amount. Most image editors resize only the first frame or flatten the animation, which is why a quick resize in a photo app so often breaks the loop.
This tool scales all frames together with gifsicle, then re-optimizes the result so unchanged areas between frames stay transparent. That second step matters: a resized GIF that skips it can end up larger than the original.
Percentage or pixels?
Use a percentage when you just want the file lighter. 50% is the usual sweet spot: the GIF still reads well on a phone, and the file shrinks dramatically.
Use pixels when the destination has a fixed slot. A blog content column might be 720 pixels wide, a Discord emoji 128 x 128, and a Slack emoji 128 x 128 or smaller. Our GIF size limits guide lists the common ones.
Choosing a scaling method
- Lanczos samples a wide neighborhood of pixels. It gives the sharpest result for screen recordings, movie clips and photos.
- Catmull-Rom is a touch crisper on text and interface elements, with slightly less ringing on hard edges.
- Smooth averages pixels. It's the most forgiving for noisy footage, at the cost of some softness.
- Nearest neighbor copies pixels without blending. Pick it for pixel art, sprites and retro graphics, ideally at 200%, 300% or 50%.
Why the aspect ratio lock matters
With the lock on, you type one side and the other is calculated for you. Turning it off lets you stretch the GIF to any shape, which is rarely what you want.
If the target is a different shape, crop to that shape with Crop GIF first. Then resize. Nothing gets squashed and you choose what stays in frame.
Order of operations
Crop, then resize, then compress. Each step works on less data than the one before. Compressing first and resizing afterwards reduces the colors twice and makes banding more visible.
After resizing, run the result through Compress GIF for another 20-50% saving. The "Keep editing this GIF" buttons under the result pass the file along without downloading it.

Resize GIF questions
Will resizing a GIF reduce its file size?
Usually by a lot. File size grows with the number of pixels in every frame, so halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels. In practice that often cuts the file by 50-75%.
For an exact limit, use Compress GIF to Size, which resizes only as much as it needs to.
Does resizing keep the animation and timing?
Yes. Every frame is scaled by the same amount and the frame delays, loop count and transparency are kept exactly as they were.
What is the best resize method for pixel art?
Choose Nearest neighbor and scale by whole numbers such as 200% or 50%. It copies pixels instead of blending them, so hard edges stay hard. For photos and screen recordings, Lanczos gives the cleanest result.
Can I make a GIF bigger?
Yes, up to 4096 pixels per side. Enlarging cannot add detail that was never there, so for 1.5x to 2.5x enlargements the GIF Upscaler gives sharper results with built-in sharpening and denoising.
How do I resize a GIF without stretching it?
Leave Keep aspect ratio switched on and enter only the width or only the height. If you need a different shape, such as a square, Crop GIF first and then resize, so nothing gets squashed.
My GIF looks blurry after resizing. Why?
Smooth scaling methods blend neighboring pixels, which softens hard edges. Switch to Nearest neighbor for graphics with sharp lines, or try Catmull-Rom, which is slightly crisper than Lanczos on text. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!
