How to enhance a GIF

  1. Upload a GIF

Drop the GIF you want to improve. The preview shows it at its real colors.

  2. Start from a preset

Vivid, Bright, Sharp and Vintage are good starting points. Original resets everything.

  3. Fine-tune

Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, gamma, sharpness, blur and denoise. The preview updates live.

  4. Apply and download

Every frame is processed with ImageMagick and the result is re-optimized.

Why GIFs often look worse than the original

Converting video to GIF throws away color. With at most 256 colors per frame, skin tones flatten, shadows lose detail and bright scenes look washed out.

Many GIFs have also been re-encoded several times on their way around the internet, adding noise and dithering each time. The enhancer can't restore lost detail, but it can make the most of what's left.

A quick recipe

  1. Click Auto levels to fix the overall range.
  2. Add a little contrast (5-15) and saturation (5-20).
  3. Use gamma to lift or deepen midtones.
  4. Add sharpness last and stop as soon as edges look crisp.

Presets

  • Vivid boosts color and contrast for dull clips.
  • Bright lifts dark footage.
  • Sharp adds edge definition to soft, scaled-down GIFs.
  • Vintage warms the colors for a faded film look.

Pair it with other tools

Enhance first, then size. If you plan to enlarge the GIF, use the GIF Upscaler after enhancing so sharpening isn't magnified twice. If the file got heavier, Compress GIF wins the bytes back.

GIF enhancer questions

Can I fix a GIF that is too dark?

Yes. Start with the Bright preset or raise brightness and gamma a little. Gamma lifts shadows without blowing out highlights, so it's often better than brightness alone. Auto levels can also stretch a dull range automatically.

Is the preview exactly what I will get?

Very close. The preview uses your browser's image filters, while the final result is rendered with ImageMagick on every frame. Sharpening, denoise and color reduction are only visible in the final file.

Does enhancing a GIF increase its size?

Often slightly. Sharpening and saturation add detail and color variety, which compress less well. Use the color reduction option, or run the result through Compress GIF.

Can I make a GIF look less grainy?

Use Denoise with a small value and avoid sharpening. Grain in GIFs is often dithering from an earlier conversion, which denoise smooths out.

What is the difference between Auto levels and Normalize?

Auto levels stretches each color channel to use the full range, which can also correct color casts. Normalize stretches overall brightness while trying to keep colors as they are.

The result looks different from what I expected.

Reset to Original and change one slider at a time. Combining strong contrast with sharpening can exaggerate artifacts. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!
